Is river kayaking your game? An ACA Essentials of River Kayaking Instructor teaches all the basic skills and how to have fun in a kayak from the start.  An ERK Instructor teaches also about river currents, obstacles, hazards and how to maneuver around them. As an ERK Instructor you are qualified to safely guide groups on gently moving river trips and can have the backing of ACA liability Insurance. Join us for this comprehensive 3-day, course. We expect that you have basic kayaking skills and at least a little experience on moving water. You will have opportunities to refine your skills as you learn to teach kayaking strokes, maneuvers and river safety.

Participants who are not able to demonstrate all of the necessary skills for Level 2 ERK certification may still be eligible for certification as a Level 1 Introduction to Kayaking Instructor.

Costs

The course fee for each three-day course is $350.  Current Fairbanks Paddlers members will receive a $25 discount.   Participants will have the following additional costs ( Participants taking both courses will only need to pay these once):

  • American Canoe Association Membership is required before the start of the course. You can register online on the ACA Membership Page. ( Regular individual annual membership is $40.  If you are a Fairbanks Paddlers member, you can join as a Paddle America Club (PAC) Member for $30. Students under 23 and seniors over 62 qualify for a $15 discount on the final registration page. )
  • Instructor Manual – Instructor workshops participants must obtain the ACA Instructor Manual before the first course. It is available for $25 for the spiral bound print version, or $15 for the CD version or the downloadable PDF version.
  • SEIC Dues – Upon becoming certified as an ACA Instructor, there is an additional Safety Education & Instruction Council (SEIC) dues payment of $25 if you wish to teach ACA courses.

River and Safety Equipment: 

Students need to provide their own suitable boats and paddling gear.

All participants will wear US Coast Guard approved Lifejackets while canoeing, kayaking, and other on water activities.

Students need to come to the class prepared for any weather and full immersion, dry suit or wet suit is a must.  This class is to become an instructor and this is basic gear that you need to instruct.

Alcohol Policy:

Alcohol may not be consumed prior to, or during, the on-water portions of any courses. We reserve the right to refuse on-the-water participation if, in our judgement, the participant appears under the influence of a judgement or motor skills impeding substance.

First Aid Training: 

A student does not need first aid training to participate in the course, but does need to have current First Aid and CPR training to instruct for the ACA.

Waiver: 

All participants, volunteers, safety personnel, media representatives, event organizers, and other involved individuals will sign a waiver and release the instructors, Cutter Aquatics, and Fairbanks Paddlers from liability.

Venues

Exact meeting locations and on water instructional venues will be finalized just before the start of the classes and may depend on weather and water levels.  We expect to hold first day of each course on Tanana Lakes.  Day 2 will likely be on the Chena River in town, likely near the Peger Road put-in behind Pioneer Park.  Day 3 will probably be held on the upper Chena River in the Chena River Recreation Area. We will have an alternate indoor location for some of the off-water learning activities.

Participants will need to provide transportation for themselves and gear, or coordinate rides with other class members.

Registration and Payments

Spaces are limited to 5 for the kayak course, as required by ACA.  If the course is full, please contact us about getting on a waiting list.

Payments

We will confirm your place in a class or event only after receiving payment.  For your convenience, we accept payment via the methods listed below:

  • Pay with your credit card via PayPal or Square Invoice
  • Pay with and electronic funds transfer using PayPal
  • Mail a check or money order to our contact address

Course fees should be paid in 30 days in advance.

Refunds

Refund requests will be considered on a case by case basis. If you contact us more than 30 days in advance, or if we can fill your position in a full course, from the waiting list, we may be able to offer a partial refund, not including PayPal or Credit Card processing fees.

If the course is cancelled due to insufficient participation or other conditions a full refund will be made.
